Grading and Trenching in Los Angeles, CA

Grading and Trenching · Los Angeles, CA

Level the lot and get it ready to build.

Grading is how a bare lot in Los Angeles gets ready for what comes next. We cut down the high spots and spread that soil over the low ones. The lot ends up level and close to the grade your plans call for. When the cut leaves more dirt than the lot can hold, our trucks haul it off.

We have been a demolition and hauling contractor in Los Angeles since 1994. Greg owns the company and runs three crews with our own trucks and skid steers. Grading is the step that follows a tear out, so the machines are already on the lot. The same visit that clears the ground can leave it level and ready to build on.

What rough grading includes

Rough grading means moving dirt around the lot until the ground sits where you need it. On a backyard job that can mean cutting a couple of feet off the high side. We spread that soil across the rest of the yard so the ground runs flat. This kind of site prep is usually the last dirt work before forms and footings go in.

Lot leveling after a house demolition is the most common version of this. The building is gone and the ground is left rough, with ruts where the walls came out. The pad needs shape before anything new gets built on it. The same site prep happens after a lot cleanup clears the ground and the lot sits empty.

What kind of trenching do you do?

We dig trenches for utility lines and for footings on houses and small builds. That covers water, sewer, gas, power and drain lines running out from the house. Depth and width follow the plans or whatever the inspector calls for. A skid steer with a bucket opens most of it, and hand work cleans up the tight spots.

Trenching on Westside lots gets tricky, because the yards are small and the access is narrow. Our compact machines fit through side gates that a full size excavator cannot. We open the line and keep the spoil clear of the work area. Backfill happens once the line passes inspection, and the extra soil leaves in our truck.

Grading across the Westside and South Bay

Our truck yard sits in the South Bay, so most of our grading work runs from there. On the Westside we grade lots in Beverly Hills, Brentwood, Bel Air, Santa Monica and Pacific Palisades. In the South Bay we cover Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach and San Pedro, down to Long Beach. The full list of cities is on our service areas page.

Our crews have worked Los Angeles lots since 1994, including cleanup after the Palisades fire. Many of the homes we work on are private, and our crews keep it that way. We hold California contractors license 792182 and carry insurance. Call 310-546-4855 for a free estimate on your lot.

Debris goes out on our trucks to licensed facilities. We sweep the street, clear the drive and leave the property ready for whatever comes next.

FAQ

Grading and Trenching Questions, Answered

Common questions about grading and trenching across the Westside and South Bay. Don't see yours? Give us a call and ask.

Call (310) 546-4855

How much does grading cost?
Price depends on how much dirt has to move and how far it has to travel. Access matters too, since a narrow side yard slows the machine down. Soil type, trench depth, dump fees and haul distance all change the number. Call 310-546-4855 and we will come look at the lot and give you a free estimate.
Is this the same as engineered grading?
No. We do rough grading, which shapes the dirt on a lot so it sits level. We do not do engineered hillside grading, mass excavation, soils reports or compaction certification. If your permit calls for a soils engineer or a signed compaction report, that job needs a different contractor. We will tell you that up front.
What happens to the extra dirt?
We haul it off in our own trucks. A cut usually leaves more soil than the lot can absorb. The excess gets loaded and taken to a disposal site. Dirt removal on the same visit keeps piles out of your driveway and off the street. Hauling has been part of this business since 1994.
Can you grade the lot right after demolition?
Yes. The machines and trucks are already on site when the tear out ends. Grading can follow in the same stretch of work. That saves you a second trip out and a second set of trucks on the street. How long it takes depends on how much dirt has to move and how tight the access is.
Do you trench for footings as well as utilities?
Yes. We dig footing trenches for additions, garages, decks and new pads on residential jobs. We also trench for water, sewer, gas and electrical lines. Depth and width follow the plans or whatever the building inspector calls for. Our skid steers fit through most side gates, so the trenching happens without tearing up the front yard.

Why Choose Southwest Hauling

Why Westside and South Bay Owners Call Southwest

Thirty Years in Los Angeles

Greg started Southwest Hauling in 1994 and still prices the jobs himself. The slogan on the trucks has not changed since: It's All About Service. Same owner, same phone number, same standard.

The Hauling Is Ours

Our own trucks and skid steers do the loading and the hauling. Debris leaves on our schedule, not a bin company's. The teardown and the haul-off are one job and one price.

City-Contract Discipline

Twenty years of City of Los Angeles contracts clearing foreclosed and vacant properties. That work runs on deadlines and documentation, and the habit stuck. Sites get finished, not abandoned.

Quiet on Purpose

Much of our work sits behind gates on the Westside, and NDAs are routine. Crews park where you say, keep the site tidy and do not talk about whose property they are on.
